"What a super 14-days’ customized trip with birding guide Cheong Weng Chun. The initial request was to focus on finding 5 bird families not yet on my “Family” birding list: a Leafbird, the Fairy-bluebird, a Cupwing, the Crested Jayshrike and the mythical Rail-babbler. I was quite worried, though, that only 2 or maybe 3 of the bird families would show up, and upon arrival at Kuala Lumpur airport I added a request for 91 lifer birds as well. Weng Chun impressed me with his guiding and spotting skills, his knowledge of the bird species, and how quickly he picked up and identified bird calls. His spotting scope is a bonus, ensuring way better views of far-away birds, than with binoculars. Weng Chun checked the weather forecast daily, planned the next day accordingly, and ensured that inclement weather was avoided and birding hours maximized. This flexible itinerary also increased the chances of finding the five target families / birds. In the end, this customized trip was a super success with all 5 bird families found and a total of 259 species listed for the trip (about half which were lifer birds for me). I highly recommend Weng Chun as a birding guide." - Lisl, South Africa
This is a trip that was supposed to be conducted back in 2020. Lockdown forced the trip to be postponed and I have been keeping in touch with Lisl for a possible tour in 2021. That never happen. How about 2022? Nope. Now we finally have the chance to meet and do some birding together.
So this period of 2 weeks, our main focus is on 5 main target birds and various 91 lifers. We covered KL, Selangor, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor. For the earlier part of this trip, we were only focusing the 5 main targets while almost ignoring all the other birds that we encountered. Only after we completed the 5 targets, we started to have a more relaxing birdwatching session and try to see as many species as possible.
After countless hours in the field looking for her target family birds, both of us are very happy to completed the mission with few days to spare. Personally, this is definitely one of the most stressful yet exciting assignments that i have ever done.
